How the Schengen 90/180 rule works

A short stay is normally limited to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Each presence day looks back across itself and the previous 179 calendar days. Arrival and departure days both count.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries count as Schengen?

The calculator uses the engine's effective-dated Schengen membership list. Ireland and Cyprus do not count; Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland do.

Do arrival and departure days both count?

Yes. For this short-stay calculation, both calendar days count as presence.

Is the rule tied to a calendar half-year?

No. It is a rolling window. The relevant 180-day period changes on every day of the stay.

Is this result legally binding?

No. It is an informational calculation. Border authorities make the final decision and personal exemptions are not modelled.
